Marvel Zombies 2 #3

Now that we’ve run out of Spider-Man comics, I decided to go with a comic that had him guesting in just so we can truly call this Spider-Man week. Next week, I pledge to review at least one thing that’s not by Marvel!

Even Marvel knows when a joke’s gone on too long. Marvel Zombies 2 is slated to be the final appearance of the undead for the forseeable future. It’s been fun - and it’s rare that mainstream comics these days are – but it’s definitely not too soon to bury (ha) this one.

So far this series, the Galactus-Zombies have returned to earth to find society attempting to rebuild itself, with the Black Panther as the leader. Wasp’s Zombie head is still around in a robot body, and they have discovered that if deprived of flesh for long, the Zombies lose their craving for it and can think straight again. Wasp was forced to infect the Black Panther to save his life and imprisoned until their cravings disappeared, they’re now free to face the attacking Galactus Zombies.

The loose structure of this seems to be based on the idea of Civil War – the Zombie heroes are divided into two camps – those, led by Iron Man, who are looking for a way out of their dimension to find new flesh, and those that are fighting their urges. As ever, Spider-Man is the moral compass, fighting his cravings and trying to aid the resistance, though he gets his torso ripped in half for his troubles. While they lacking a Captain America, the resistance movement has luckily created one, though the Black Panther is shocked to discover that it’s using the barely-aware, zombified body of his son.

All in all, it’s decent story. It’s good that after a succession of jokes and largely substanceless cameos, the ending to the Marvel Zombies saga does appear to be a decent story. Sean Phillips has made the universe his own with his artwork throughout the series, though while I accept that it’s an appropriate tone, I do find it occasionally a bit too muddy and dirtied. I am, however, looking forward to seeing how all this ends. There’s no way the Zombies will be allowed to escape the universe, and I’m currently predicting that, if Zombie genre conventions are followed, the humans will bring about their own destruction through betrayal and in-fighting, though there is a chance they’ll just nuke the universe to put a cap on the whole thing. The fact that I’m interested enough to speculate, though, speaks plenty for the series and idea as a whole.
