This week, all the usual suspects: Scud, Buffy, and discussion of the latest Scott Pilgrim news. Finally, they say no news is good news – in which case, good news for comics!

tsp2.gifHot on the heels of that Sam and Max news from a few months back, this week’s Comics Daily-endorsed solicitation is for the SCUD THE DISPOSABLE ASSASSIN: THE WHOLE SHEBANG! from Image. Youngsters amongst you won’t remember it, but back in the day, Scud was one of the breakout indie anarcho-comedy hits, alongside stuff like Groo, Sam & Max, and Milk & Cheese. It even had a computer game! With both this and American Flagg getting collections, it’s good to know that the hard-to-find gems of the past still have a market today. It almost gives me hope that Miracleman might be seen again… (JH)

tsp2.gifSo, as has been reported in various places, Michael Cera is pretty much locked-on to play the title role in Edgar Wright’s movie version of Scott Pilgrim. More than anything, it’s simply good news to hear that the film itself definitely appears to be going ahead – it’s as perfect a fusion of director and material as you could possibly hope to find, and I’m desperately excited about the prospect. As for Cera… well, he’s Canadian, he’s a geek, he’s the right age, and he’s a great actor. It could definitely work, but I don’t think his usual schtick – as seen in Arrested Devlopment, Superbad and Juno – is necessarily right for the role, so it’ll be interesting to see if he can show some range. Bryan Lee O’Malley himself, meanwhile, has weighed in with a bit of a rant about the lazy reporting of the news – he’s narked that people have assumed that the film is going to be called Scott Pilgrim’s Little Life purely because of an error in the original Hollywood Reporter story, and states that he can’t yet reveal the movie’s title. He’s also said that “it is based on the entire story arc, not just the first book”, which is particularly interesting given that we’re still two books away from completion – this would suggest that the film in general would deviate quite strongly in places (and also be a quite compressed version of the story). Of the available titles, meanwhile, I’d say Scott Pilgrim vs. The World or Scott Pilgrim Gets it Together would probably be the best-sounding… Anyway, the most important thing for me, really, is that it is a goer – it’s seemed perfect for a Wright-directed movie since day one, and with such rising names attached it could really bring some deserved attention to what is an utterly wonderful comic. tsp2.gifAnd, in other Scott Pilgrim news, Bryan O’Malley talks about Scott Pilgrim on the Fair Game show. Always good to hear straight from the man himself. (JH)

tsp2.gifWith all the focus on Buffy #12, people may have missed the PaleyFest Buffy Reunion (as narrated by TV Guide). On the one hand, it sounded like any Whedon fan would’ve killed to attend. On the other, it sounds a little excruciating. If there’s one good thing about the comics, it’s that the characters no longer have real people behind them generating tension with one another. Yikes. (JH)

tsp2.gifMaybe it’s just a post-convention lull, but it’s been a damn slow week all around. Half the reason we took the long weekend off reviews was because almost nothing came out worth reviewing! Even Paul O’Brien, who has done the X-axis weekly for as long as I can remember, took the week off! Amazing. Even LITG is on hiatus. Yeesh. Luckily next week there should be plenty to review, especially because Marvel has scheduled FIVE out of the six currently-published Ultimate titles to come out next week. Slow clap, Marvel. (JH)

tsp2.gif Edit: Oh yeah, I should mention. I’m doing a weekly (er, fingers crossed!) comics column for Den of Geek. It’s called Alternate Cover, because I was never able to come up with a better pun than that which I used for my old NTS column, and for the first week, the topic is My First Comic.
