What with just about every issue of Captain America containing at least 60 references/flashbacks/etc. of WWII (or events involved), I think it was only a matter of time until Ed actually brought him back there.

"Popular superhero appears to die after being shot with a magic time-travel gun" is a strange plot to come up twice in the same year, that's for sure.

(Cait Kiernan's Dreaming, though? Every bit as bad as anyone could ever say. Not talking about the earlier standalone stuff, nor even really the stuff when she was alternating with Peter Hogan - but when she got her hands on it solo and it actually turned into substandard fanfic)

Ah, it's probably not as bad as all that, it just leapt out (when I first did a full read-through of the whole series a little while back) as an utterly confused mess that was a huge comedown from what had come before, and which didn't know what it was trying to do. There was some pretty poor dialogue and character work, too. And a dreadful, dreadful issue that tried to retcon Buddy's origin (again) and throw in a load of stuff about his dad being a violent gun-nut-hunter type.

Also, while I generally like Steve Dillon, his art just felt a horribly wrong fit for the book, and he never really seemed to get into the groove with it.

It was probably better than the interminably dull (but mercifully short) Jerry Prosser run, though. Not sure if it's better or worse than the more self-indulgently bad elements of the (occasionally half-decent, but often not) Delano stuff.

Was the Veitch Animal Man that bad? I've never had any urge to read anything past the Morrison and Milligan runs, but the one Tom Veitch thing I have read, The Nazz, wasn't at all bad (even if I was mainly there for the Bryan Talbot art).

Plus, of course, there's something straaaangely familiar about that whole "Everyone thinks this iconic superhero is dead, but! He's actually trapped back in time!" thing that I can't *quite* put my finger on...

Haha. Even the title betrays the fact that they weren't putting much effort into it ;-)

Agreed with this article 100%.

Just a note, that I have blogged about the death of Ult. Strange on my blog.

Not sorry to see him go, but man... what a horrific piece of writing.

While characters like Luke Cage and Iron Fist have never been A-listers, they've always had their fans clamoring in the background for their time to shine and recently they've gotten it in big ways. Same with the characters from Agents of Atlas, Nextwave (Machine Man, at least), Hercules and the characters from the brilliantly handled Cosmic line. But Voodoo? Honestly?

It's nice to see Marvel remembering they have old characters to give a chance. But at the same time, the Magic corner of the MU hasn't been all that popular. Strange isn't the biggest character Marvel has, but at least he has something resembling exposure (whether within comics or even video games, animation, etc.). Voodoo on his best days is a D-lister. Maybe that's to his advantage, but I have my doubts.

That, and one of the things that allowed the Cosmic books to do so well was that they didn't hang on the coattails of bigger titles. That whole section started as its own thing and it's all the better for it. This feels more like Marvel's attempt at a "Rebirth" book but instead of it being a mini, it gets to derail another book for a couple of issues instead.

I just can't imagine this direction lasting for long.
