While I’m a massive fan of Mike Carey’s work on X-Men: Legacy, I can’t help but notice that portions of it are lost on the neophyte reader. As Xavier attempts to pull together fragments of memories and discern their meaning, many members of the audience find themselves in a similarly confused, unable to tell exactly what the reference points are for the scenes they’re reading.

Now, I’m the kind of person who thinks continuity is worth using, and worth using well. It should make you ask questions about what came before, and eager to read those stories. Since Marvel aren’t currently using footnotes and annotations, I figured it might be helpful to do put them online so that anyone interested can have a look at what exactly is being referenced and why. My intention is to complement the stories in X-Men Legacy.

Just a few things about the annotations. For clarity, here’s how I will refer to the various X-Men series:

Uncanny X-Men means the 60s X-Men series, from issue #1 onwards.
X-Men
means the 90s X-Men series, called X-Men Legacy from #208 onwards
[New] X-Men means the 90s X-Men series as, retitled during Morrison’s run
New X-Men means the 00’s “Mutant Academy” book
Astonishing X-Men, unless otherwise noted, means the Whedon run

If no volume number is stated, assume I’m talking about Volume 1.

Page numbers refer to story pages only and exclude recap pages. Hopefully this’ll make the annotations match up with the trade a little easier, but… we’ll see.

I will try, whenever possible, to link to Marvel Digital Comics version of any issues mentioned, so get yourself an account and you can experience some interactive fun, reading the issues that are referred to.

This project wouldn’t be remotely possible without the Marvel Chronology Project or the X-Axis Indexes, both of which are used for reference.
